As has been noted in other writings on this web site, visible fire lanes together with public awareness and support, limit property damage and save lives by providing the safest and most rapid access to people and buildings while also insuring the safety of first responders.
De-Facto fire lanes are those public or private roads, lanes, parking lots, ramps, and other pathways that provide the only access to a public use facility by first responders using vehicles. In many cases De-Facto fire lanes are not readily discernible and therefore should either be painted or harbor appropriately spaced telemetry controlled instructive signage. Here are a few of the many unidentified De-Facto fire lanes in Evergreen that probably escape the attention of the general public.
- The access road from North Turkey Creek Road to the front of Marshdale Elementary.
- The curb in front of the BPRC.
- The North lane of the parking lot on the entire South side of Evergreen High School.
- The parking lot at the front of the WRC and to the West entrance.
- The connecting road between the High School parking lot and the West entrance of the WRC parking lot (painted).
- The narrow access lane from the Olive Road cul-de-sac to the Southeast corner of the WRC and the telephone pole hosting a battery of transformers.
- The “no parking” area and fence in front of the Lake House.
- Rt 74 through the center of Evergreen (real time on-the-fly coordinated traffic signal control fire lane).
- The access road from Rt 73 to the cul-de-sac in front of the Evergreen library.
- The cul-de-sac in front of the Evergreen library (in need of repainting).
- The shortest routes between each firehouse and each community use building (established with on-the-fly coordinated traffic signal control ).
